 Genetically Diverse Sweet Oranges 

Sweet Oranges are susceptible to diseases. This becomes a challenge for modern agriculture and for food security. Researchers at Nature Genetics sequenced 226 citrus varieties to find the reason behind the diseases. They discovered that these sweet oranges originated from a cross between a sour orange and a mandarin. Using genome analysis and artificial hybridization experiments, researchers identified that some defense-related metabolites can potentially inhibit the growth of multiple pathogenic bacteria. They used this information to domesticate oranges, making them disease-resistant. 

Sweet Oranges, scientifically known as Citrus sinensis, are produced in high volumes and in cultivated areas. Sweet oranges are high in antioxidants and represent 50% of global citrus production. After the genome analysis was conducted, curiosity about the genome of citrus fruits was raised based on their specific color, location, and taste. Advancements in genomics and biotechnology have helped deepen our knowledge of genome species, evolution, agriculture, and molecular mechanisms.
